Abstract

The formulation, structure and use of the Verberne organic matter turnover model are described. Rate constants, efficiency factors and rules to distribute organic matter between the different input pools in the model are given together with the assumptions that had to be made inrunning the model against a series of long-term datasets. Both the effects of moisture on decomposition and the (extensive) crop residue data were simplified greatly in order to allow the model to simulate a majority of the datasets thus providing a thorough test of the ideas underlying the description of organic matter turnover in the Verberne model. The model fared well against all of the datasets, tracing the build-up and decline of organic matter with time accurately. 48% of all simulations were found to be within +/-5% Of the corresponding measurement and 86% within +/-10%.
