Abstract

Rectal swab specimens from 225 dogs were examined for the presence ofthermophilic Campylobacter (C.). CCDA-medium was used for isolation. C. sp. were isolated from 68 (30.2 %) of all the specimens; C. sp. were found in 29.9 % of non diarrheic and in 31.6 % of diarrheic dogs, in24.7 % of the privately owned and in 60 % of kennel dogs. The incidence was found to be higher (45.3 %) in dogs up to 1 year old, compared with the older ones (25.6 %). C. sp. were isolated in 27.4 % of females and 32.3 % of males, in 31.8 % of purebred and 27 % of mongrels. By agglutination latex-test and biochemical reactions of 68 isolates 63.2% could be identified as C. coli, 20.6 % as C. jejuni, 5.9 % as C. lari, in 5.9 % a differentiation between C. coli and C. jejuni was not possible. 3 strains could not be identified as C. jejuni, coli or lari.
