Abstract

Laboratory bleaching studies were carried out on sulfite pulps to develop TCF (totally chlorine free) bleaching sequences suitable for paper-grade sulfite. TCF bleach sequences will be required for this subcategory, under the EPA's proposed effluent guidelines. Previous work hasshown that sulfite pulps can be effectively bleached with oxygen and peroxy acids with acceptable economy. This study assesses the ability of sequences using oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and peracetic acid to produce high-quality TCF pulp. The results showed that good metals management is essential for producing high-quality TCF pulps. A high-temperature peroxide (P) stage significantly reduced the retention time compared with a conventional P stage. However, pulp from the high-temperature P stage was somewhat lower in viscosity. Peracetic acid (Paa) was effectively used as a complementary bleaching chemical in the sequencePaaQP. This allowed the production of high-brightness pulp while maintaining pulp viscosity.
