Abstract

In case work, fibre examiners are often asked to examine tapings fromvarious outdoor surfaces. The significance of textile fibres is extremely difficult to assess owing to the total lack of background information about the normal fibre population on outdoor surfaces. Tapings made from a variety of locations (33) population was classified according to type, colour and length. The predominance of cellulosic fibres was overwhelming (92%). Colourless cotton was present on all surfaces; blue denim fibres were found on all but three of. them, and grey/black and red cotton were also found on the majority of surfaces. Synthetic fibres were relatively rare, the most common form being viscose. Many fibres were under 1 mm long; longer fibres were likely to have been more recently transferred.
