Abstract

U2Ni2Sn is known as an antiferromagnet where the reduced U-magnetic moment (1.05(5)(mu B)) results from an important 5f(U)-3d(Ni) hybridization. In order to learn more about this hybridization, it is interesting to substitute greater palladium atoms for nickel in this ternary stannide. Results of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements are presented for the U-2(Ni1-xPdx)(2)Sn system. The composition dependence of the Neel temperature, which displays a minimum around x approximate to 0.30-0.35, is discussed on the basis of both the RKKY magnetic model and magnetic structure of these compounds. It isevidenced that its magnetic properties are well described by an anisotropic RKKY potential. The antiferromagnets U2Ni2Sn and U2Pd2Sn are located on the magnetic ground state map which is calculated with the anisotropic RKKY model. From this location, we deduced the composition dependence of the Neel temperature which is in good agreement with the experimental results.
