Abstract

Epidemiological survey of AIDS patients was undertaken in a Toulouse hospital in 1992. Since 1994, national guidelines recommend the use ofprimary prophylaxis against atypical mycobacterial infections (MAI) in patients below 100 CD4 cells per mm(3). The authors describe the trends of MAI among AIDS patients since 1993, so as to underline the usefullness of this prophylaxis. A dramatic decline of MAI prevalence was observed in 1994, since primary prophylaxis was begun that year, with rifabutin. No changes were observed regarding disease characteristics. Changes described concerning HIV risk factors reflect global changes of the AIDS population, in the Toulouse region. These results support the generalization of MAI primary prophylaxis.
