Abstract

The adsorption of CO2 on NiO(111)/Ni(111) and OD/NiO(111)/Ni(111) was studied by infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). When the surfaces were exposed to CO2 at 123 K, peaks of adsorbates appeared at 1263 and 910 cm(-1) on NiO(111), while a peak appeared at 1267 cm(-1) on OD/NiO(111). The peaks at 1263 (or 1267) and 910 cm(-1) could be assigned to the! symmetric O-C-O stretching and out-of-plane deformation modes of monodentate carbonate, respectively. The much smaller deformation peaks in the spectra of carbonate on OD/NiO( 111) indicate that the molecular axis is perpendicular to the surface. Furthermore, the change of the molecular geometry of CO2 was attributed to the OD-induced change of surface structure of NiO(111), which was indicated by the weak perturbation of OD bands with the adsorbed CO2.
