Abstract

The fascinating phenomena of recurrent winter depression and its successful treatment by light continues to elicit extensive research worldwide, Although our understanding of the epidemiology of the disorder and of the efficacy of light grows, the underlying pathophysiology of the disorder and the physical mechanism of light's effects remain an intellectual and scientificpuzzle, Phase-advanced circadian rhythms and disordered serotonin regulation remain the physiologic mechanisms of greatest study.
