Abstract

A collection of 194 accessions from seven Aegilops species, obtained from Gatersleben, Germany, was evaluated for resistance against five wheat diseases: leaf rust (Puccinia recondita f. sp. tritici), stem rust (P. graminis f. sp. tritici), Septoria tritici blotch (Septoria tritici), eyespot (Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides) and powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici. ) Seventeen (11%) our of a total of 160 accessions of A. tauschiiwere resistant against leaf rust, 13 (8 %) against stem rust, 16 (10 %) against eyespot, 38 (24 %) against powdery mildew and almost 99 % against Septoria tritici blotch. Multiple resistance was widespread in A. tauschii andmany accessions exhibited double to four-fold resistance to the rested diseases. Resistance varied from immune to a moderate (intermediate) reaction. Among the six other Aegilops species rested, resistance against leaf rust and stem rust was detected in one or more accessions of A. variabilis, A. comosa, A. peregrina and A. lorentii. Since A. tauschii is the donor of the D genome in common wheat, this species can be readily exploited in the transfer of disease resistance genes for bread wheat improvement.
