Abstract

The linear stability analysis of internal flows generated by side injection (Taylor flows) was used to reach the conditions for an acoustic resonancein a simple rectangular cavity. This result establishes a powerful mechanism for destabilising solid propellant motors. This mechanism, which was first discovered through full numerical simulations, can elucidate some of theunstable behaviour of solid propellant motors. The approach followed makesuse of fine experimental measurements compared with the linear theory in cases without resonance and with the full numerical results when resonance is established (C) Academie des sciences/Elsevier, Paris.
