Abstract

Analytical methods to describe the thermodynamic properties of interstitial solutions are reviewed, It is important to take into account the effect of excluded sites. caused by each solute atom blocking its neighbouring sites from being occupied by other solute atoms. The blocking can be hard or soft depending on the interaction energy. For nondilute solutions it is also important to take into account the overlapping of excluded sites which decreases the net amount of excluded sites. Based on these principles, a new analytical model is proposed which is empirical in nature but for hard blocking in the case of a coordination number of 2 for the interstitial sites, found in hcp metals, it agrees with the quasichemical theory which is valid for that case.
