Abstract

During last two decades, researchers have been engaged in determination ofrole of rumen protozoa in metabolism of different nutrients. The effect ofdefaunation on animal productivity viz. feed digestion, body growth, wool production were not always positive. Some reports indicated that protozoa were essential part of the rumen habitat and their exclusion from the rumen ecosystem has a harmful effect on the animal performance While others opined that protozoa were wasteful partners of rumen habitat and are a burden cmrumen energy availability. In this paper, effect of defaunation on the performances of ruminant animals is discussed.
