Abstract

Optical anisotropy of the molecules of poly(1-trimethylsilyl-1-propin) (PTMSP) in solution was studied by the flow birefringence technique. The PTMSPmolecules possess a high positive birefringence, which exceeds by one order of magnitude that of poly(vinyltrimethylsilane), a polymer having a similar structure. A semiempirical quantum-chemical calculation showed that the high optical anisotropy of the macromolecules studied (at an insignificant anisotropy of the monomer unit) is indicative of their high intramolecular orientational order. This conclusion additionally confirms the correct selection of an ordered helical model for the quantum- chemical calculation of PTMSP, which provided a good quantitative agreement between the calculated optical and geometric characteristics of macromolecules and the experimental values.
