Abstract

EDFA preamplified receivers can achieve sensitivities close to those possible with heterodyne detection while offering a simplified system design. For this sensitivity benefit to be realized, narrow optical bandpass filters are needed to limit the EDFA amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. This letter presents, for the first time, an analysis and sensitivity resultswhen a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is used as the optical filter. (C) 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
