Abstract

Differences among Vicia faba L. and Pisum sativum L. varieties in supporting pod-filling by fixed N-2 were studied in a pot trial under greenhouse conditions. The rate of lower leave dying, nodule number and the percentage of N-2 fixed during pod-filling of the total amount of N-2 fixation were determined. The two studied Vicia faba L. varieties fixed about 75 % of the total amount of fixed N during pod-filling. This was nearly the same in two Ethiopian Pisum sativum L. varieties, whereas five German pea varieties showed marked differences in this respect. A semileafless variety ('Renata') ceased fixing N-2 with the onset of pod formation. The percentage of N-2 fixed during pod filling of total N-2 fixation was closely related to the rate and extent of lower leave dying in Pisum sativum L. but not to the number of nodules, although the latter differed significantly among some of the Pisum sativum L. varieties. It is concluded that the rate and extent of lower leave dying might be used as a breeding tool for legume types with high andlasting N-2 fixation.
