Abstract

The prognostic value of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) in malignancy is still a subject of controversy. AgNORs were studied in ten cases of typical medullary carcinoma of the breast, a tumorwith a usually favorable outcome. The number and area of AgNORs in tumorous nuclei were determined with a semiautomatic image analysis system. The mean number of AgNORs per tumorous nucleus was greater in the group of medullary carcinomas than in a control group of twenty grade II infiltrating ductal carcinomas (p = 0.04). There was no difference in AgNOR area between the two groups. According to the literature, tumors with a good prognosis generally contain fewer AgNORs than their counterparts with a poor prognosis. Our study suggests, therefore, that AgNOR count is not of prognostic value in typical medullary carcinomas.
