Abstract

Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia in adults, is characterized by a heterogeneity of behavioral and cognitive features and cannot be definitively diagnosed with noninvasive measures. Nevertheless, Alzheimer's disease can be identified with a high degree of accuracy using diagnostic criteria based on clinical features and the exclusion of other potential causes of dementia. Differential diagnosis of dementia includes a wide variety of conditions, including cardiovascular, systemic, metabolic, infectious, degenerative, affective, and genetic disorders, as well as drug and other types of toxicity and trauma. Evaluation of the patient presenting with dementia should focus onfeatures of the illness that suggest the presence of conditions otherthan Alzheimer's disease, since the course of many of these conditions may be altered with treatment.
