Abstract

Selective processing of visual information is associated with changesof a number of ERP components. The fundamental selection of stimuli on the basis of their location is indexed by an amplitude enhancement of the early sensory evoked Pl (80-140 ms) after stimulus onset) and N1(160-190 ms) components, while the selection of color, shape, spatialfrequency or orientation modulates negative components in the 200-400ms time range. Similarly, selective processing of different levels ofhierarchically structured stimuli is associated with an amplitude enhancement of an early posterior negative component peaking at about 250ms. Time course and topographical distribution of this component provide strong evidence that global- and local-level information (the parts and the whole) of these stimuli are processed by separate systems that operate in parallel at an early perceptual stage.
