Abstract

The liver is primarily responsible for the synthesis of most plasma proteins including coagulation factors and inhibitors. In liver diseases, the levels of these proteins decrease according to the severity of the lesions. Although acute hepatopathies in horses tend to decrease the pro-coagulant and inhibitor factors in blood, they do not seem to produce spontaneous bleeding disorders. However, some bleeding disorders could appear when casual lesions or ordinary surgical procedures take place. Sixteen adults mongrel horses, of both sexes (lot 1), were administered ''per os'', 0.6 ml/kg of C Cl4 in 25% of mineral oil. Threeother horses (lot 2) were administered mineral oil only (0.2 ml/kg). On the 2nd day after the C Cl4 administration the following test readings changed (p < 0.01): one stage Prothrombin Time, APTT, factors II -V - VII - X - IX - XI; on the 3rd day (p < 0.01) factor XII and AT III presented different readings and on the 6th day only the fibrinogen was reduced. Neither the thrombin time nor factor VIII were abnormal. All the tests performed in animals of lot 2 were normal. In lot 1, some liver enzymes (GGT - AST) increased from day 2 onwards. The horses did not show spontaneous bleeding disorders. The liver biopsy, 48 hoursafter intoxication, was positive to centrolobulillar necrosis.
