Abstract

The structure of the quasicrystal-forming liquid alloys Al71Pd19M10 (M=Mny(FeCr)1-y) was studied by neutron scattering using the isomorphous substitution between Mn atoms and the sigma-FeCr mixture. From the four total structure factors measured for y = 1, 0.639, 0.254 and 0. only three combinations MM, MA and AA of the six partial functions necessary for a complete knowledge of their structure were determined in a pseudo-binary A90M10 (A = Al or Pd) description. The S(NN)(Q) functionof Al71Pd19M10 was. however, measurable by the structure factor for y= 0.254. The fairly good superimposition of this function as a function of Q/Q1 (Q1 being the first peak position) on the S(NN)(Q) functionof liquid Al80Mn20, in which icosahedral symmetry was confirmed by molecular dynamics, suggests that such a symmetry also exists in liquid Al71Pd19M10.
