Abstract

The transfer of retention aid (high-molecular-weight cationic polyacrylamide) from pulp fibers to fines and fillers modelled by polystyrenelatex (PSL) particles was investigated in the laboratory under simulated papermaking conditions. Cleavage of polymer chains during transferwas also investigated Rates of polymer transfer increased with increasing hydrodynamic shear, decreasing polymer content, and decreasing time for polymer adsorption on pulp before addition of PSL particles. Ata polymer addition of 0.1 %, 50 % of the polymer adsorbed on pulp wastransferred to the PSL fines within 1-2 min. Comparison of molecular-weight distributions of original and transferred polymers shows that significant polymer cleavage occurs during the transfer. The results provide insight into why retention aids are so sensitive to conditions at the paper machine's wet end.
