Abstract

Aqueous solutions of para-substituted phenyldiazosulphonates were irradiated by excimer laser pulses at 308 nm. Alkyl chains of different lengths were either bound directly to the phenyl ring or linked to the ring through ether or amide bridges. In all cases, the photolytic decomposition proceeded in a two-step reaction via the corresponding para-substituted phenyldiazonium ion. The shifts in the electronic absorption maxima that occurred on detachment of an SO32- ion from the parent molecule were analysed by semiempirical quantum chemical calculations. From a quantitative evaluation of the changes in the UV spectra recorded during the photolysis experiments, quantum yields for both decomposition steps were determined at pH 1, 2 and 4. The yields for different types of substituent with the same chain length were comparable, in the range 30%-40%, irrespective of the bridging functional group. However, a significant dependence of the quantum yields on the length of the alkyl chain was observed. Yields of photolytic decomposition of thecorresponding diazonium ions, obtained from analysis, were in the range 35% to 60%, and were in good agreement with the results of separateirradiation experiments of diazonium ion solutions.
