Abstract

The fast cooling of the orientationally disordered phase of some molecular compounds can prevent the first-order transition into the ordered low-temperature phase. Thus, the quenching of 1-cyanoadamantane C10H15N results in a glassy crystal which shows all the dynamical and thermodynamical features of a conventional glass. By high-resolution neutron scattering, the existence of molecular motions was evidenced and the evolution of the Debye-Waller factor was analyzed. Time-of-flight spectroscopy yielded the determination of the density of states. In bothcases, the effects of the annealing were monitored for several days. A comparison with the conclusions of an X-ray diffuse scattering analysis was made. In the high-temperature phase, preliminary effects were evidenced just above the transition to the ordered phase.
