Abstract

To determine the affinities among cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, the interlaminar bond strengths (sigma) of their multi-layer films were measured by a detachment test. The sigma values were in the orderof cellulose/hemicellulose > hemicellulose/lignin > cellulose/lignin. This result indicates that the affinity of lignin for hemicellulose was more than that for cellulose. An increase in sigma between cellulose and lignin was brought about when lignin-carbohydrate complex (LCC) was mixed with lignin. Furthermore, the increase was more significant when the LCC was localized at the interface of the laminae. These results indicate that the LCC works as an adhesive for polysaccharide and lignin, in other words, as a surfactant or a compatibilizer.
