Abstract

Phenol was adsorbed on a polycristalline gold electrode from aqueous neutral, acidic and alkaline solutions. In situ vibrational infrared and Raman spectroscopy yielded results implying a perpendicular orientation of the adsorbed molecule at concentrations larger than approx. 5 mM, depending upon various experimental parameters. Spectra obtained with 2 mM or less of phenol dissolved yield evidence of a flat or strongly tilted orientation. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy SERS is the more sensitive method.
