Abstract

We report a measurement of optical nonlinear susceptibility of CdS using the Z-scan method. The input laser light irradiating on the CdS single crystal had a wavelength of 514.5 nm and a flux density of 16 kW/cm2. We estimate a nonlinear susceptibility of chi(3) = 3.5 X 10(-9) (esu) being in agreement with an anharmonic oscillator model based on excitons. We also found that when a DC electric field was added on the sample of CdS, the nonlinear absorption increased as the applied DC electric field was increased.
