Abstract

The central nervous system effects of nicotine are important to consider when analyzing nicotine dependency. The studies performed during the 1970's and 1980's suggesting that nicotine enhances cognitive functions (attention, learning, reaction time, and problem solving) are of limited value because of their many methodological flaws. The cognitive effects of nicotine have recently been the focus of renewed interest, as attested by the special issue on nicotine published by the review<<Psychopharmacology>> in September 1992. However, some issues remainunsettled. Enhanced performance after exposure to nicotine might be due to a primary effect on the brain or to elimination of withdrawal symptoms with adverse effects on performance. Cerebral effects of nicotine might be confined to specific information processing mechanisms or extend across the board of mental processes. Because most studies focused on the acute effects of nicotine, chronic effects are poorly known. An important issue is whether tolerance to the performance effects of nicotine occurs over time in chronic smokers. Wide interindividual variations are often seen. Psychological factors (e.g. mood, temperament) should also be taken into account, since reasons for smoking vary across individuals and situations.
