Abstract

We describe a correction procedure for calorimetry data based on a response matrix approach. The response matrix is calculated using a Monte Carlo event generator coupled with a fast deposition program which simulates the response of the calorimeter to hadronic and electromagnetic showers. The data which are analyzed are transverse energy measurements from a relativistic heavy ion experiment (E814/E877) at the Brookhaven AGS. We use the method to determine the differential cross section (dsigma/dE(T)) as well as the spatial distribution of transverse energy (dE(T)/d(eta)), both in bins of pseudorapidity eta and as a parameterized function of eta. The method is found to be insensitive to thecharacteristics of the event generator.
