Abstract

A large scale prototype of a liquid argon accordion calorimeter, conceived as a sector of a full LHC Barrel detector and consisting of an electromagnetic and a hadronic section, has been constructed and testedat the CERN SPS with electron and pion beams in the energy range 10-287 GeV. The energy resolution measured for electrons is 10%/square-root E[GeV] with a local constant of 0.2%. Preliminary results on the hadronic section, which for this first exposure had only half of its transverse coverage, look encouraging and show that the calorimeter behaves according to the design figures.
