Abstract

Ten cases of localized amyloidosis fortuitously discovered upon examination of operative specimens are reported. Three patients went on to develop systemic amyloidosis, whereas in the seven remaining patients the deposits remained localized to the larynx (n= 2), cardiac valves (n = 1), bladder (n = 1), sciatic nerve (n= 1), eyelid (n = 1) or fallopian tube (n = 1). The pathogenesis of localized amyloidosis is unclear, although presence of dystrophic lesions may be a risk factor. In most cases the deposits are composed of monoclonal light chains (AL type).
