Abstract

Wettability measurements of PbBiSrCaCuO (PbBiSCO) ceramic by liquid silver and Ag-Cu, Ag-Pb and Ag-Bi alloys and AES analysis of relevant surfaces in these systems are reported. Alloying is shown to promote wettability, the lowest contact angle, 18 degrees, has been measured forAg-4 at% Cu, compared to 78 degrees for pure Ag. Data analysis has been done in terms of a model that includes effects of elemental segregation on the interfacial energies of the alloy/ceramic and alloy/gas interfaces. The different role of Cu, as compared to Bi or Pb, has been deduced, and confirmed by AES. In particular, dissolution of the ceramic elemental constituents occurs in the drops, and both Bi and Pb segregate at the drop surfaces. Cu, on the other hand, was found to accumulate at a distinct narrow zone surrounding the drops, and presumably segregates also at the liquid/solid interface.
