Abstract

Word problems depicting the comparison of quantities have been shown to be difficult for elementary school children in several studies. Onereason for this may be that young children lack situational understanding because they are not familiar with the quantitative comparison ofsets. In previous studies it has been shown that children who received comparison problems following stories that induced situational understanding of qualitative comparisons performed better than children whoreceived comparison problems following stories that had nothing to dowith the comparison of sets. It was hypothesized that children can only access the mathematical problem solving knowledge necessary to understand and solve comparison problems if the goal of making two sets equivalent in quantity is activated. In the current study we tested how strong the connection between this goal and the problem story has to be to provide the facilitating effect. In a study with 83 kindergarten children and first graders the compatibility of a goal directed story and word problems was varied and the results showed that there was a clear relation between compatibility and facilitating effect.
