Abstract

Samples of various compositions of (Sr2-xEux)RuH6 (0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 2) were synthesized from stoichiometric mixtures of EuH2, SrH2, and Ru powders heated in a hydrogen atmosphereat 800-degrees-C. Powder X-ray diffraction results of the single phase products were indexed on the basis of a face-centered cubic cell. The unit cell lengths increased with decreasing ''x'' between the limits7.557 angstrom and 7.608 angstrom. Paramagnetic behavior was observedfor the europium containing samples and the effective magnetic moments were consistent with divalent europium. Positive Curie-Weiss constants, THETA, go from 4K to 39K as ''x'' goes from 0.2 to 2. They are interpreted as indicating the onset of ferromagnetism at low temperatures. Molecular field theory is invoked to interpret the composition dependence of THETA.
