Abstract

Survival of a Gram-negative, 2,4-dimethylphenol-degrading bacterium was reduced from 30% to 3% as a result of exposure to 02 for 10 min after lyophilization. Freezing the cells in argon prior to lyophilizationincreased the survival rate to 100% when cells were not exposed to O2after lyophilization. Although high survival rates could be achieved,metabolic damage resulted in incomplete metabolization of 2,4-dimethylphenol.
