Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy and safety of cefotiam hexetil (CTM) 200 mg bid with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AAC) 1 g bid over a 10 day treatment. 211 adults with chronic sinusitis were enrolled in this multicenter, prospective, double blind, placebo study controlled by ENT specialists. Sinusitis diagnosis suggested in front of facial pain, purulent nasal discharge, and/or obstruction was confirmed with sinus X-rays. Use of antibiotics, or corticosteroids, or both, 15 days prior inclusion, represented one of the majorexclusion criteria. The statistical analysis was carried out in ''Intend To Treat'' (ITT) and in ''Per Protocol'' (PP) groups. The two populations were comparable at inclusion as far as demographic data, clinical and radiological signs xere concerned. At the end of treatment, 82% of the patients with CTM and 82 % with AAC were healed in ITT analysis, respectively 84 % and 83 % in PP analysis. The incidence of adverse events was less frequent in the CTM group (13 % against 40 %). Thisdifference is statistically significant (p < 0.001). In conclusion, CTM 200 mg bid has proved to be an efficient treatment for chronic sinusitis and to offer much better tolerance than AAC 1 g bid.
