Abstract

There is considerable evidence that perceived stress can cause significant and occasionally large increases of plasma total and LDL cholesterol levels. This may be due to induced emotional anxiety that increases sympathetic nervous system activity and thereby suppresses LDL cholesterol receptors. Moreover, different behavioral states may be associated with more sustained effects. Thus, states of behavioral ,,activation'' tend to be associated with higher cholesterol levels, and withdrawal from life activities with lower levels.
