Abstract

A dispersion of hexagonal AgI nanocrystals in 2-butanone exhibits many of the photoeffects associated with silver halide photographic emulsion grains. Photoluminescence, photolysis, and regression of photo-produced Ag0 have been studied in this model system, using picosecond-resolved emission and transient absorption spectroscopies complemented with computer modeling. Salient results obtained in a regime of nonlinear excitation include establishment of Ag2 as the nucleation threshold for Ago phase formation, and complete reversibility of photochemistry observed in this apparently inert environment. Implications for the photographic process are discussed.
