Abstract

X-Ray analysis of crystalline 1-(3,3-dimethyl-1-butenyl)pyrene (BP) revealed that in cis-BP the pyrenyl ring has a completely perpendiculararrangement (90-degrees) from the double-bond plane. The energy of the triplet state and the energy difference between cis- and trans-BP were determined by photoacoustic calorimetry. Based on the above results, the potential energy surface for the one-way isomerization of cis- to trans-BP in the triplet state is discussed.
