Abstract

Spectroscopic ellipsometry of gyrotropic media allows one to determine the optical activity when transmission methods do not appear suitable. The ratio of the ellipsometric signal to the mean light power ranges between 10(-5) and 10(-7). A multipass reflection experiment operating principally under conditions of total reflection can provide a substantial enhancement of this signal. We thus report the first clear experimental evidence of the influence of chirality on light reflection. The differential circular reflectance spectrum was found to accord well with the spectral dependence of optical activity determined by othermeans.
