Abstract

Co/Cu multilayer systems exhibit the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect which is assumed to be a consequence of antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling of the magnetic Co layers for a certain Cu spacer layer thickness [1]. Variation of the Cu layer thickness can also lead to ferromagnetic (F) coupling of the Co layers which reduces the GMR effect to nearly zero. We use Lorentz microscopy to investigate F and AF coupling of the magnetic Co layers in Co/Cu multilayer (ML) systems. We present a new method to derive quantitative values of the F coupled thickness fraction (alpha(F)) of the Co layers obtained for a (Co/Cu)(n) ML system (t(Co) = 1.6 nm, 1.5 nm less than or equal to t(Cu) less than or equal to 2.5 nm, n = 10). For the ML of the GMR maximum we derived a mean alpha(F) of 43% and proved for the ML of the GMR minimum that it is perfectly F coupled.
