Abstract

A priming study (N=120) with subjects in the age-range of 56 to 80 years was conducted to investigate whether elderly people protect their self-concept against threatening I implications of a negative stereotype of aging by supplementing the concept <<old>> with positive associations. Reduction in decision time latencies by priming positively valenced targets with the concept <<old>> was found to be correlated with age in the predicted direction. These self-protective adjustments in the connotational profile of the concept <<old>> were supported, by a dispositional tendency to adjust personal goals and values according tosituational demands (Flexible Goal Adjustment) and were most prevalent for people who classify themselves as old.
