Abstract

The pathophysiology of migraine and ist relationships to other chronic headache disorders are still unknown. Modern migraine hypotheses arebased on the presumption of a primary instability of the neurotransmitter-mediated cerebrovascular autoregulation. For the first time we discovered a disturbed cerebrovascular autoregulation in migraine duringthe headache-free interval. We measured the neurovascular parameters vasotonus, vasomotion and vasoreactivity by means of transcranial doppler ultrasound. Significantly increased parameters were found in migraine, while in other headache disorders, such as drug-induced headache or episodic and chronic headache of tension-type, characteristic changes of abnormally neurovascular parameters were established.
