Abstract

A new mathematical model is developed to explain previously determined experimental data on the effect of pulsed DC fields and electrode insulation on the phase separation of water-in-oil type dispersions. Thetheory includes an original analysis of the way that charge which hasaccumulated at the interface between the electrode insulation and theliquid during the pulse 'on' period will decay during the 'off' period. The theoretical treatment leads to the postulation of a novel mechanism for electrically augmented coalescence in such systems. The findings have significant implications for the design and scale-up of commercial coalescers.
