Abstract

Results from preliminary experiments for a three-dimensional shock wave reflection from a cone are presented. The wave configurations, in ameridian plane, of the shock wave reflection from a cone are comparedwith those obtained for the shock wave reflection from a wedge. The shock Mach number was 1.34 and the half-apex angle of the cone was 30 degrees. The main conclusions from the present study are as follows: 1)the angle of attack that causes the transition from a Mach to a regular reflection on the lower side is about 10 degrees for the cone case;it is smaller than that obtained for a similar wedge case, 2) the trajectory angle of the triple point observed in the cone case is smallerthan that in the wedge case, and 3) Whitham's shock dynamics theory slightly overestimates the trajectory angle of the triple point.
