Abstract

The magneto-optic properties of sputtered multilayers Fe-Si (1.9 nm)/Cr and Co-Nb/Pd (1.4 nm) are studied by magneto-optical spectrometer and ellipsometer. For multilayers Co-Nb/Pd(1.4 nm) both calculated and measured polar Kerr rotation theta(K) increase with increasing magnetic layer thickness d(m). For small d(m) there are great differences between the measured and calculated theta(K) spectra especially in the short-wavelength range. It is suggested that the Pd atoms are spin-polarized and have an additional magneto-optic effect. For multilayers Fe-Si/Cr theta(K) has minima at Cr layer thicknesses of 1.0 and 1.9 nm. With further increasing Cr layer thickness, theta(K) decreases to zero, which can be explained in terms of the conventional optical constant effect.
