Abstract

This study investigated the potential source of bias arising from selection site and method of participant recruitment in studies of neuropsychological performance among participants with HIV-1 infection. Neuropsychological test data on participants with asymptomatic and symptomatic HIV-1 infection from 3 sites were compared: participants recruited from a private medical group, a community-dwelling volunteer cohort, and an immunodeficiency clinic at a Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Results revealed that selection site and method of participant recruitment are significant factors related to neuropsychological test performance in both symptomatic and asymptomatic HIV-infected gay or bisexual participants and may serve as potential sources of bias affecting the results of neuropsychological studies of HIV-1 infection.
