Abstract

A 3 year old boy with urinary bladder exstrophy operated many times before without any complications, developed severe pulmonary obstruction and hypotonic heart failure after having been intubated for an antireflux surgery. After a short period of stabilization he developed a ventricular tachycardia and died. Laboratory findings showed markedly elevated antibodies against latex. As children with malformations of theurinary system or with spina bifida have to be operated on in early childhood, they have a high risk to develop antibodies against latex. We therefore recommend to have emergency sets latex free at the Intensive Care Unit, and to test all children at risk.
