Abstract

Since Seldinger(1) described the percutaneous puncture of the femoralartery in 1953, this technique has become the most common means of access to the arterial system for diagnostic and interventional procedures. However, in cases where this access is not feasible or contraindicated, the interventional radiologist is forced to use another site to approach the vascular tree. Multiple vascular accesses as well as their advantages and disadvantages have been described by many investigators. It is our intention to provide the reader with a general review ofthe most frequently used sites of access and techniques, emphasizing the importance of anatomic knowledge as a fundamental base to avoid complications.
