Abstract

We present the case of a 50 years old woman with meningeal carcinomatosis due to breast cancer. Neurological signs were bilateral loss of hearing and lumbosacral polyradiculopathy. The diagnosis was established by detecting malignant cells in the cerebrospinal fluid. Magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple small medullary metastases spread overthe whole spinal space. By treatment with repeated courses of intrathecal methotrexate, cytosine arabinoside, and corticosteroids, followedby radiation of head and spinal cord, the cerebrospinal fluid cytology became normal and the neurological symptoms receded. The patient survived the neoplastic disease for nine years and the meningeal carcinomatosis for three years with sufficient quality of life.
