Abstract

When the cyanobacterium Synechococcus sp. PCC 7942 is exposed to moderately excessive excitation, as induced by high light or low temperature shifts, the cells respond by inhibited growth and partial photoinhibition of photosynthesis. Photoinhibition is efficiently counteracted and eventually overcome by a transient replacement of one photosystem II reaction center D1 form (D1:1) with another (D1:2). By this interchange, the cells counteract photoinhibition largely by increasing D1 rum over but possibly also by modulating photosystem II function. As thecells acclimate to the new environmental conditions, growth is resumed, photoinhibition is relieved and the reaction center protein D1:2 islargely replaced again by D1:1, which appears to be the constitutive D1 form under steady growth conditions. Our data show that an increased excitation pressure on photosystem II triggers the D1:1/D1:2 interchange. The responses of photosystem II in synechococcus to excessive excitation contrast sharply with those of algae and higher plants.
